Pro Bono Publico
Did you know that the term 'pro bono' comes from the latin phrase 'pro bono publico' and quite literally means 'for the public good'? Graphic designers are often asked to do pro bono work, as many organisations have very little – or no budget at all – for design services, which can be a difficult decision for design professionals. One the one hand – we take what we do very seriously, know the value of good design, and need to make a living. Yet on the other hand – doing pro bono work can help those who need it the most, and have other enriching benefits... not just to our portfolios and essential ongoing business relationships.
I was approached recently by the Victorian Public Tenants Association (VTPA) to update their existing two-page A4 flyer. The VPTA is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation, recognised as the peak body representing public housing tenants in Victoria and advocate on their behalf to improve and expand public housing in Victoria. You can find out more about them at vpta.org.au
The flyer needed some interest to bring it to life, and convey who they are and what they do, both graphically and in written text. This new version is full of personality and colour, and the feedback on it has been very positive... so thank you to the VTPA for the opportunity for me to contribute!
